This memorial website was created in the memory of our loved one, Edward Smith who was born in Maine on June 08, 1969 and passed away on August 22, 2005 at the age of 36. We will remember him forever.
What do I say; I say that he was everything. He had to be the most beautiful person I have ever met. He was my world....
Our story goes like this: I met Ed when he was 17 years old he still lived at home with his mom. I met his sister Penny before I met him. I was 19 and already had 2 kids but that didn't bother Ed he accepted them both unconditionally right from the start. I remember seeing Ed for the first time at his friends wedding he was an usher, he was handsome . He remembered me from school but I didn't remember him I was older hung with a different crowd. I knew his brother Bill from school he was in my class. When I first started seeing Ed it was not very easy I was having issues with my son's father and it was not an easy time period, Ed put up with alot of BS to be with me. I was having custody issues with my son and Ed helped me through it all, my sons father didn't really like Ed too much at first it took a long time for them to get along, but eventually they did. James that is my son John's father was very sad when we lost Ed. Ed played a very big part in John's life and he was an example for John and he I think did a good job if I may say so myself we have a very fine young man in our midst. Ed loved my kids like they were his very own. I was a very busy girl when I first met Ed. I moved back and forth from Mass. to Me. whenever it got rough in one place I would pack up and move to the other and vice versa, always on the go. Ed was a fisherman when I met him too. His was gillnetting at the time and that was trip fishing so he was gone for a few days so I never really had any kind of restrictions as far as being able to come and go as I pleased. Then as I started to get older I settled down a little bit not so much back and forth. Ed never complained about the amount of traveling I did he just let me go, In 1990 we got married in Fitchburg,Mass. in my mas' back yard it was the most beautful day of my life really it was. Ed was so handsome he was wearing a gray tux almost exactly like the one he was wearing the first time I saw him at his friends wedding. I thought it appropriate that he wear a gray tux because if I really think about it that was the first time I fell in love with him. I just saw him and knew that I was gonna spend the rest of my life with him. The way he looked at me that day He really gave himself to me, again with the whole unconditionally thing. He truly saved my life. Ed was a commercial fisherman and that is how this story even comes to be. He fished most of his life with his best friend Scott McGuire on The Miss Whitney. He fished on a couple other boats but mostly with Scott, as a fisherman Ed probably spent more time with Scott than he did at home with his family. That is the life of a fisherman though. Finally Ed got his own boat we named her "Bout Time" . We thought it fitting since it was bout' time Ed got his own boat, so that is where the name of his boat came from. When we got the boat it was in very hard shape it sat in our dooryard for a year before we could even afford to fix it. We finally got the money and Ed started to work on his boat. It is a wooden boat that Ed fiberglassed over he did it all by himself too. Very hard job. We finally got it launched and away he went lobstering. I fished with him sometimes. I loved it and I know why Ed loved it. It is a very peaceful place to work just miles of ocean no cars no noise except for the boat engine,VHF, and the radio. Ed's boat is smaller than most here and when the weather turns we can't go as far as the other boats can so Ed had to find other means of work to support the family. He did scalloping in Hyannis,Ma. . Ed went down the first year with a guy from home. I went to visit and we met some people while we were there. Seth Wahlstrom was one of them. Ed seemed to like this guy quite well so he jumped aboard his boat the Northern Wind and went surf clamming with him, Ed stayed at Seths' house with him and his family so he wouldn't have to stay aboard the boat, gets cold in the winter, burr! Well I was traveling back and forth to see Ed and I was staying at Seths' home also when I went down well we had a little disagreement and I got huffy and left well Ed was right behind me and he came home with me. He got a job with Scott again and then we went to the Cape again to go scalloping again. In the mean time Ed had gotten his operators permit, an operators permit just allows Ed to run someone elses boat for them. Seth knew that Ed had his permit so he asked him if he wanted to run The Northern Wind. It was a 50' steel vessel. If you are a fisherman that is a pretty good job oppurtunity so naturally Ed jumped at the chance. This is when things get bad. I had to leave Hyannis because we didn't have quite enough money for me to stay. I had to come ome to Maine. Ed was fishing for another guy and the boat broke down and the guy told Ed to find other work if he wanted to so we would have money until the boat got fixed but things went wrong there too. The boat wasn't getting fixed so that is when Seth asked Ed to take his boat. Ed can't swim and I make no quams about it either I make sure that everyone that is fishing with Ed knows that he can't swim just in case you never know what might or could happen out there. I kept telling Seth that I hope everything is good I need Ed to come back home you know he is my EVERYTHING, my WORLD and I need him. Well Seth went out a few trips with the guys you know so Ed could get used to the boat and stuff. First time Seth let Ed take it out of the harbor and steam to the fishing grounds, second time Ed ran the controls and stuff third time Ed did everything. So then he started to take the boat himself with his crew Shawn Balestraci and Andrew Joseph. They got four or five trips in and that was it. No More. From what I understand to date is that they were dragging for scallops and fetched up on something on the ocean floor Ed kicked the boat out of gear to drift back over the drag and fetched up again and capsized the boat. Ed of course could not swim and was consumed by the ocean not to be recovered as of date. His crew did however make it back. They spent two days floating around the Atlantic Ocean hoping and praying to be rescued from their demise. From what I understand there was no insurance on the boat, we did not have life insurance and I do not work as of date. I do however have a car payment and a daughter to take care of not to mention myself. So as this big change has entered into my life I have to learn to deal with the fact that there is no more hey hun to pay the bills, or no more hey hun I don't feel good will you Please take care of me, or the Hey Hun I Love You, that is my hardest change yet.....
